Winners of birdhouse contest, Malaga Cove School, Palos Verdes Estates, California

Abstract/Description: Image shows group of four boys who won prizes in the first annual birdhouse competition, the cumulation of a manual training department assignment at Malaga Cove School. Students made thorough investigations into the habits and tastes of the various birds for which the houses were to be built and installed around the school grounds. Identified, left to right, are: 1. Jack Wallace (3rd prize); 2. Richard Yarnell (shared 2nd prize); 3. Spencer Moeller (shared 2nd prize); and 4. Melroy Hodge (1st prize.) Prizes, consisting of three books on birds, were presented to the boys by Frank A. Vanderlip. The community birdhouse, held and designed by Richard Yarnell and Spencer Moeller, was modeled after one wing of Malaga Cove School.
