Betty Karnette

Growing up in western Kentucky, Betty had always valued the importance of education. After moving to California with her husband, they settled in Long Beach in which she completed her college education from Cal State Long Beach and went on to teach for Los Angeles Unified School District. She enjoyed teaching very much, and liked to move from one school to another to learn from different school communities and gain various experiences. She taught many subjects ranging from math to chemistry to English and even P.E. and special education.

In the early 90’s Betty decided to run for the California Assembly and was successfully elected. She later went on to serve two terms in the Senate and two more terms in the Assembly, and became very involved in community affairs and political matters. She was the Chair of the Port Commission Committee at Los Angeles/Long Beach Port. She was also in the California State Legislature and learned how important international trade is for this country’s economy. Betty contributed vastly to the development of the Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach and feels very fortunately to have been able to represent this part of Southern California. Location: Port of Long Beach, Long Beach, CA.

Betty’s message for the world:
“You should actually listen to what people say, rather than being too judgmental. If you really listen to what other countries and people from other countries are saying to you, and try to see the world from their perspective, and think about what they need more than what you need, we will be much better able to solve problems, world problems.”
